Garnet Canyon

Often frequented by climbers, the Garnet Canyon Trail is an exciting high country hike with stunning up-close views of Middle Teton.

Beginning at the Lupine Meadows Trailhead, the walk begins with a relatively flat stretch through mature forest, before heading up a ridge to the first junction. After heading west, there are a series of switchbacks climbing steeply to Garnet Canyon Trail. Once here, turn south and follow the trail above the stream to its source in a large boulder field, finishing below the towering peaks of Middle Teton. You then retrace your steps back to the beginning.

You will be accompanied by the clanking of climbers' equipment, and if you intend to tackle any of the steeper areas near the summit, you will need your own ropes along with some rock climbing expertise.

The distance of this hike varies significantly according to preference, from around 13 km up to 20 or more. Where the official trail tails off, giving way to climbers' paths, there is the option to continue walking for some considerable distance: but bear in mind that the terrain will get more difficult and markings will be much more limited. A delightful side trip to nearby Surprise and Amphitheatre Lakes adds another 6km or so to the walk.

The Grand Teton Loop joins the trail on its way from Taggart and Bradley Lakes, following it to the Lupine Meadows Trailhead, and on to Jenny Lake.

There is some camping available in the 'off-trail', upper reaches of the canyon. If you are interested, enquire at one of the visitor centres or ranger stations.
