WALK SUMMARY

The 'King's Pathway', a thrillingly high and exposed path tacked to precipitous gorge walls in Andalucia.

The old via ferrata had fallen into disrepair, with next to nothing in terms of structural integrity, and gaping rends in the fabric of the path, but we are told has been repaired.

Designed and built as an engineers' route between the Chorro and Gaitanejo Falls, for the Conde del Guadelhorce dam. Walked by King Alfonso XIII in 1921. The metre-wide pathway climbs to over 100m above the distant river.

DEFINITELY NOT for those without a head for heights.

Walkopedia friend Paul Hadaway said ( pre restoration):

First, I thought this is nothing compared to AV1 in the Dolomites.

Then the soles of my feet contracted, then my stomach.

Then I thought: "Pussy cats, they're clipped onto cables!"

Then I saw the bit at the end where they can't have been, and passed out!

Camino del Rey is no longer a terror. Local council has rebuilt the walkway completely and it's now completely safe. Access still restricted and you have to book to get a place on any particular day, but the terror factor that knocked 10pts of the score is now a thing of the past
