Zelve

Key information: Zelve

    • One of the greatest of Cappadocia's canyon complexes, Zelve is an open-air museum packed with fascination, an extraordinary selection of chambers dug from the wildly eroded canyon sides. Wander among ruined churches (from the C9 to C13) and houses in this one-time monastic retreat, beneath thrilling cliffs and unreal spires and formations.
      • Zelve divides into three deep canyons that wind back into the northern escarpment of the Ak Tepe mesa. Glorious scenery enhances the historical excitement even further: this is much more atmospheric to walk round that the better-known Goreme Open-air Museum, although its churches, and wall-paintings in particular, are not as fine.
        • Off the road from Cavusin and Avanos east of Goreme, Zelve is very popular with coach tours, so make time to walk deep into the canyons, to gain the full benefit of this outstanding place.
