Ilhara Valley

Key information: Ilhara Valley

    • One of Cappadocia's finest valleys, which has it all - a mass of churches and a monastery hewn out of the huge cliffs-walls of the surprisingly green canyon which cuts through the Cappadocian plain.

WALK SUMMARY

THIS PAGE IS AT AN EARLY STAGE OF DEVELOPMENT. PLEASE HELP US BY MAKING SUGGESTIONS AND SENDING PHOTOS! THANK YOU!

This deep, deep 16 km canyon winds through the Cappadocian plain some 60km south-west of Goreme.

A lovely and fascinating time awaits you. The valley contains an enthralling selection of churches (with wonderful wall paintings), chambers and a monastery, all cut from the vast cliffs of the canyon sides. Don't miss Selime Monastery in the northern end of the valley.

Below the grey cliffs are lush trees and streams. It feels more remote than many valleys nearer Goreme.

There are said to be only four ways down into the valley, but you can choose how long you want to spend in there. We recommend you take at least half a day walking the valley, so you get away from the crowds. From the Ilhara Valley Tourist Facility, above the stretch with the finest monasteries, to Selime at the north-western end is about 6 hrs. It is up to 8 hrs from Ilhara village in the south-east to Selime.

See our Cappadocia page for further detailed information on the area.
