WALK SUMMARY

Descend through the changing ecosystems of the western flank of the Andes in the north of Ecuador. Start in high paramo heathland and descend through cloud forest to the subtropical Mirva Valley around 3,000m below.

Fine views, gorgeous forest, a deep integration with this still pristine landscape, and a chance for good encounters with the still characterful local communities at the places you will stay.

Access from El Angel, 4 hours by bus north of Quito. You could make good day walks in the area around the start.

An alternative trail covering similar ground is the Catarama Trail.

Guides are not essential but enhance the experience.

This walk is in remote mountains with uncertain weather, where altitude can cause problems. Come fully prepared, including proper acclimatization.
