WALK SUMMARY

The relatively undiscovered Julian Alps (think Dolomites without the crowds) fills north-west Solvenia, offering superb Alpine walking, with outstanding natural beauty and spectacular views. The area's favourable climate and plentiful rainfall support a wide variety of flora and fauna.

The Lower Bohinj Ridge to the south of the beautiful Lake Bohinj offers a variety of walks, including 1,922m Vogel from the cable car top (5 hrs); to a fantastic 8-hr ridge trek, at heights getting on the 2,000m so don't try it too early in the year or you will meet standing snow. This southern fringe of the Jalps has gorgeous views in every direction, with the heart of the Julian Alps lying to its north. It is also famous for particularly fine wildflowers, and that is saying something. Really not to be missed. You can do superb multiple-day traverses here, staying in the plentiful and pleasing refuges.

Walkopedia walked the ridge in September 2015, from the top of the Vogel cable car, west and then north along the Lower Bohinj Ridge and up to the Prehodavcih hut above the Triglav Lakes Valley as part of a planned Grand Bohinj Horseshoe. See William Mackesy's account.

Beautiful Lake Bohinj, Slovenia's largest, sits in a superb glacially gouged trough, beneath huge cliffs to its north and west end, and is an excellent walking base, with fine walks in every direction.
