WALK SUMMARY

Trolltunga (the troll tongue) is an extraordinary (and famous) flat slab of rock at about 1,1000m which juts horizontally out from the mountain into free air about 700m (2,330ft) above the north side of the Ringedalsvatnet lake.

This is a fabulous walk, with wonderful views and drama throughout – mountains, lakes, cliffs, beauty galore.

Trolltunga is very popular, so you won’t be alone: in 2016, more than 80,000 people walked to Trolltunga, making it one of Norway’s most popular hikes.

The round hike to Trolltunga is 27km or so in rough terrain with 1,100m of elevation gain. It takes approximately 10-12 hours, including breaks.

Trolltunga is 17km from Odda, Hordaland and is about 190km away from Bergen, in Western Norway.

Begin at the parking area at Skjeggedal. Nearby is a funicular and the trail begins on its left side. It is marked with paintd red Ts.

The trail rises about 450m in the first 1.5km. It levels out then climbs again, another 330m to Trombåskåret. After this 4km or so quite steep climb, the rest of the walk is more up-and-down.

A new toll road gets you up the steep hillside to Mågelitopp if you want to climb less, but the parking capacity here is 30 cars per day. The road opens each day during the season at 6.00am, and closes when the first 30 cars have entered the gate. No reservation is possible. It costs 600 NOK. The road is also open to hikers.
