Key information: Tiger's Nest

  • Famous walk to Taktshang Goempa (Tiger's Nest), Bhutan's best known (if not finest) and most dramatically situated monastery, clinging to a cleft in a sheer cliff 900m above the Paro valley. An inspiring walk to a tremendous place.
  • The initial trudge up the hillside, through scrubby trees but with increasingly fine views across the fertile valley toward the surrounding hills, can seem like a bit of a tedious slog, especially if you are newly arrived at this altitude, but the first glimpse of the monastery dispels all doubts.
  • The Lonely Planet has helpful information on this trek.
  • Kudu Travel do an excellent-looking expedition to Bhutan. Walkopedia partners, so recommended!

Recently did this. A must if visiting Bhutan. I recommend doing it at the end of your visit as it is a perfect way to end your visit. Takes about two hours to get to the stairs. Then there are about 700 stairs to the monastery. A bit quicker back. For those who cannot walk all that well, donkeys can be hied for part of the journey. A nice cafe about half way. Doable by most people just take your time/
