WALK SUMMARY

Steep climbing up this amazing, rugged lone basalt monolithic in the south-west of Mauritius, with cliffs, caves and overhangs galore – and abundant forests. Rare flora, an exciting climb and stunning views – what’s not to like? The hotels on the shoreline below…

It is said by many that Le Morne was used as a shelter by runaway slaves, called ‘maroons’, through the eighteenth and early years of the nineteenth century. Mauritius became known as ‘maroon republic’ because of the comparatively large number of escaped slaves who hid there. Since the abolition of slavery in 1835 the ‘maroons’ have achieved legendary status and Le Morne has become the symbol of their suffering. That said, Wikipedia says there is no firm evidence to support these legends.

Privately owned, so it costs to walk here. A guide may be compulsory, check.
