Key information: Istalif

Long farmed as one of Afghanistan's most beautiful places, beloved of Mughal Emperor Babur and British agent Alexander Bums alike, this once-lush, irrigated valley of orchards, vineyards, trees and fish-laden streams, north of Khabul in the foothills of the Hindu Kush is surrounded by dramatic mountains and will, once peace is (ever?) properly restored, make for marvelous walking. Currently too dangerous to go!
