Key information: Tarik La

    • This high trek crosses the main Himalayan range, from Trans-Himalayan, Tibetan/Ladakhi feeling Spiti to the lusher alpine Kinnaur region, over this grand (4,865m) pass in 4 or 5 days. Or vice versa.
      • Cultivated valleys to high, barren mountains to meadows and forests, this trek takes in huge and fascinating variety. Likewise, Spiti is Buddhist, Kinnaur Hindu, so you will enjoy quite a cultural transition.
        • You start lower so the altitude gain is greater from the south.
          • A steady ascent in magnificent scenery gets you to the huge views at the Tarik La/ Bhaba Pass. Starting at 2,250m(ish), you will need to take this walk steady to ensure safe acclimatization.
            • Meet shepherds and travellers on this old route between Spiti and Kinnaur.
              • The northern end of this trek is on the same route as the Pin Parbati Pass route: you could turn west and head over that great pass to make a truly memorable trek.
                • Travel in late June to mid-October, mid-September to mid-October to avoid the monsoon.
                  • Tough walking in remote mountains, where altitude can cause real problems (the Tarik La is at almost 4,850m). Come fully prepared, including proper acclimatization. Briefish info in Lonely Planet?s Trekking in the Indian Himalaya. Check the current permit requirements. Longer chapter in Trekking and Climbing in the Indian Himalaya.
