Walko friend Charles Bookman says: You can visit Huchuy Qosqo on a two-day trek of 12 miles with elevation change of about 2,000’ (see map). Our route began at the Tauca trailhead, forty minutes’ taxi ride from Cusco. Our first day, from Tauca to Huchuy Qosqo involved eight miles and climbing 2,000’. The day was not technically challenging, but everything at that altitude takes more effort than you can imagine. We spent 7 ˝ hrs. on the trail, including extensive visits with farmers and frequent pauses to identify and discuss native plants. We walked through the ruins at the end of the first day and then spent two hours there on the second day. The steep, precipitous descent to Lamay involved a little over two hours on the trail. Guide: Many tour companies can organize a trip to Huchuy Qosqo. Our guide Aurelio Zanabria M. was a fine and knowledgeable trail companion. He readily shared his knowledge of flora, fauna, and local customs. Aurelio works with several tour companies and can help you organize your expedition.
