Key information: Hay Stacks /High Stile Ridge

    • Alfred Wainwright's favourite mountain, Hay Stacks, is a superb, rough excrescence, between beautiful Buttermere and magnificent upper Ennerdale.
    • The ridge walk waking in the higher High Stile has to be one of the best in Britain, with its huge and outstandingly lovely views and great variety of terrain.
    • While you're at it, why not swing round and take in Fleetwith Pike at the heads of Buttermere (if coming from that valley), or Great Gable to the south-east, if coming from Ennerdale.
    • There are no less than 25 inspiring Cicerone guide books on the Lake District (their speciality)! Have a look at their website. Find relevant books by using Amazon search function:
    • See our Lake District page for further photos and general and practical information.
